The last stage in implementing the Blue Flag in a new country is a pilot phase. The US program started its pilot phase in 2021 with the acceptance of four pilot sites by the International Jury. These sites are working towards meeting all National and International criteria at their locations. We are excited to support them in reaching compliance and submitting their first applications.
Currently the Blue Flag USA program is only operating the Blue Flag beach award. If you are interested in being considered as a Marina or Tourism Boat pilot site please contact staff.
Located at the far eastern tip of Galveston Island, Texas, East Beach is the perfect getaway for beach and nature lovers. Away from the sounds of Galveston’s historic Seawall and downtown, you can sip a margarita at the bar while taking in the best views of the Galveston Bay Shipping Channel. East Beach is bordered by the East End Lagoon Nature Preserve and Big Reef Nature Park, providing some of the best bird watching and outdoor recreation opportunities on the island. At the heart of the park is the Pavilion and Entertainment stage, completed with restrooms, showers, a children’s playground and concessions. Unlike most of Galveston’s beaches, alcohol is permitted at East Beach. The expansive park has parking conveniently located near the beach front, making it easier for you to start your relaxing day under the sun. During the peak summer season, you can find USLA certified Lifeguards and convenient umbrella and chair rentals along the beach. Find your personal oasis at East Beach.
Zuma Beach is one of the most iconic and well-known beaches that the County of Los Angeles Department of Beaches and Harbors (DBH) maintains and operates, with approximately 1.8 miles of beach frontage. Amenities include food concessions, restrooms, showers, volleyball nets, and eight parking lots with approximately 2,000 parking spaces. Beach wheelchairs and accessible amenities are also available. This beach has become popular for swimming, body surfing, surfing, and windsurfing, and is a great place to watch grey whales make their winter migration. The segment of Zuma Beach that DBH is submitting for Blue Flag review, is located along Westward Beach, adjacent to Zuma Lagoon. The Blue Flag certification program is an opportunity for DBH to further enhance coastal access, increase environmental resilience, and better serve beachgoers at one of our most popular destinations.
