Program Coordinator, Annie Mercer, traveled to Florida last month to promote the Blue Flag USA program and represent the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA) at the City of Delray Beach’s Flag Raising Ceremony.

The hybrid Blue Flag workshop allowed interested communities and partners to hear about the process, criteria, and reactions to Blue flag award status from the City of Delray Beach staff responsible for meeting the award criteria. Between in person and online participation, the workshop engaged over 20 participants in conversation about criteria, benefits, engaging community partners to help satisfy criteria, and next steps.

The workshop was followed on Wednesday morning by a flag raising ceremony celebrating the second year the Delray Beach Municipal Beach site has been awarded by the International Jury.  Delray Beach Municipal Beach between Casuarina Road and Laing Street will see the Blue Flag flying from May 1, 2024, through April 30, 2025. The ceremony was attended by staff, community members, partners, and elected officials.

Blue Flag extends the ASBPA’s vision of preserving, protecting, and enhancing our coasts by merging science and public policy to provide more guidance for local communities, who are the heart of our membership. Westward Beach in Malibu, California and Delray Beach Municipal Beach in Delray Beach, Florida, received the recognition for the 2024 season making both beaches two-time award recipients.

Blue Flag USA will be hosting another information session for Community Staff on August 7th at 3pm ET. You can RSVP now to add the event to your calendar.
